http://www.flickr.com/ has a selection of photos that are creative commons photos.

There are really some striking photos in the collection. When you need just the right image and don’t know where to find it, try FLICKR – Creative Commons images. You can right click on these photos and go to “COPY with url” and the information regarding that photo will be added to wherever you are going to place the photo. This is most helpful to teach students the importance of giving credit where credit is due, even if it is allowed to be used. This picture above was from Everyone’s photos with the description Creative Commons.

With this photo I had a little bit more trouble getting it inserted into my blog. I am not sure why, but am glad it finally worked.

So make use of appropriate photos and be sure to add the appropriate information regarding copyright.

And teach your students to do the same!

A Fair(y) Tale about Copyright

This is a a charming video about Copyright and Fair Use.  The authors took little tiny snippets of characters from various Disney films to get the words into sentences that told what they wanted to tell about copyright.

Sometimes it is a little hard to understand due to that method, but if you listen carefully you will understand.  You might have to listen to it more than once.

While I was listening/watching, I wanted to type out the words (text) and wished it was shown underneath or off to the side like a closed captioning.

Have fun and TURN UP THE VOLUME!

This would be interesting and appealing to students of certain ages to demonstrate what fair use is and what copyright is.

What ages do you think would best understand these concepts via this video?

Using Video to Engage the Learner...

The following slideshow created by Richard Bryne of Technology for Teachers has important information that all teachers need to know AND TEACH, particularly regarding copyright.

As teachers, we must teach our students that although it seems that everything is FREE on the internet, there are responsibilties to give credit when using other people's information. There are also guidelines and rules about how much we can use. Most students growing up in this environment do not realize the need for copyright. They do not seem to think it applies to them. It is our obligation as teachers in this 21st Century to make sure students learn these lessons well as their lives will be in and on the inernet.
